Know Your Foundation

by: Remix - posted 10.06.05

According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, a foundation is the basis upon which something stands or is supported. In the life of a Christian, the foundation is extremely imperative. The foundation is the first step of our Christian walk and everything else in our lives follows. Our foundation will determine the outcome of our spiritual walk.

I knew someone who grew up in a Christian family. He went to church a few times a week and went through all the "Christian" routines. He told me he prayed, read the bible, fellowshipped, sang, etc.  After talking with him a few years, he has realized that he still feels empty inside. He told me how he would see new Christians extra excited about God and some existing Christians excited also but wondered why he didn’t feel the same way the others felt. I told him to ask God why he didn’t feel as excited as the others felt though he was active in the church and living like a Christian. After a few weeks of breaking down scripture and talking about it with some people, he realized that he was doing the “Christian routines” but didn’t have Step 1, a foundation. Realizing this changed his views on everything.

1 Corinthians 3:11 says “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

This simple verse means so much to me. I understand that Christ is the foundation and He will make any changes in my life that I allow Him to. I expressed this to him and it gave him comfort.

As humans, we want to rely on our strengths to make changes yet Jesus tell us in Matthew 11:28, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” In other words, He doesn’t want us to use our strengths but allow Him to do it.

Sometimes it’s hard to understand but God works inside/out not outside/in. God works on our mind, heart and soul first. The outcome of His work in us is clearly seen by our actions or fruits. We want to do good deeds so that God would by glorified but deeds are secondary to Him working in our lives. The good deeds will come naturally once God starts doing a work in us. After praying and just plainly asking for Him to make the changes, my life changed completely.

Have you ever thought about how your Christian walk is? Have you forgotten to remember who your foundation is? When we are absolutely sure that Jesus Christ is our foundation and we yield to Him and allow Him to make changes in your life and truly allow Him to reign in all parts of our lives then God will do an extraordinary thing in our lives.
